"Most of the time, people don't really want the truth. They want something that makes them feel good."- Ebro Darden
As a Tastemaker, your opinion will not always align with the general consensus. Hot 97's Ebro Darden not only accepts this immutable responsibility but has learned to foster it into a 24 year career in radio. In the first part of CULTUREDAPPROVED's interview with Ebro In The Morning's Ebro Darden, discusses being a troublemaker and how the mall helped a teenager from California with no interest in working on radio become one of the few tastemakers on the format.
In the last nearly two and a half decades, Ebro has held almost every conceivable position at a radio station. Program director, music director, on-air host, researcher, sales and was even apart of the, now prehistoric, tradition of calling radio listeners to find out what songs they enjoyed to develop . Ironically (given what you assume about his personal life) Ebro's troublemaker moniker led to some illegal activity that started a burgeoning career on radio:
I used to work in the mall. Shout out to everybody in the mall, but I used to steal clothes and sell it in the hood. I was a stock boy, so I would know when everything would come in. But, at the same time when the cats that were doing the clubs wanted to come get Guess or come get Girbaud jeans, I worked at the store that had those, so I knew when the new this was coming in and the new that was coming in. That's how I started a lot of relationships with DJ's and people in radio, just being that kid in the mall that had the hookup on clothes.
