#MovieChoiceMonday: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Christmas of 2015 we got a gift that we've wanted for years. Since the disappointment of the prequel trilogy in the early 2000's, die hard fans of the franchise have had come to terms with how their beloved galaxy had gone so far far away from the original trilogy glory. With the release of the latest installment, The Force Awakens, its safe to say that we have again found a new hope.
After a billion dollar world wide run, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now on Blu-Ray. Packed with hours of behind the scenes extras and deleted scenes, we can now take a closer look, dissect the film and make our fan theories and predictions for the up coming episodes.
What we do know about the Star Wars universe revival is that J.J. Abrams has set the stage for a kick ass joy ride of a time. From the very opening, J.J. Abrams let us know that "this aint your daddy's Star Wars" with the introduction of Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver, in the first scene. May it be by commanding his ruthless Storm Troopers to kill all the villagers or force freezing a blaster beam, Kylo Ren (with that awesome mask and light saber) is set up to be a worthy follow up to the infamous Darth Vader. Kylo isnt the only new character we get from The First Order, but is by far the most menacing.
On the other side of the Force, we meet our unlikely hero's. First there is Finn, who was a storm trooper with a change of heart and the abandoned scavenger, Rey. Both of these characters are fresh faced new comers, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, respectively, dive head first into this universe and convince us that they are the new generation of our favorite space opera. A few of our favorites return to the franchise as well. Hollywood legend Harrison Ford reprises his role as Han Solo and is at the top of his game with his performance. The same is said about the princess turned Resistance general, Leia played by Carrie Fisher. Seeing 2 of the original 3 on screen will make the heart melt on any die hard Star Wars fan.
The film isnt with out its flaws. Many critics and fans alike, called out the familiar beats to the original Star Wars films. As well as the under utilization of some really cool characters, most notably Kylo Ren's right hand lady, Captain Phasma and the best pilot the Resistance has to offer Poe Dameron. Hopefully we get to see them more brought to the forefront a little in the next two episodes.
Beyond the nostalgia and the other 6 films, this movie is a joy to watch and re-watch. The Force Awakens is the latest must have in your Blu Ray collection. Stay Woke with the Force.
