7 reasons why 2016 will be the year of the Comic Book!
Let's be honest. In the last 5 years or so, comic books have been the inspiration behind Hollywood's biggest Blockbuster movies. Whether it's the "Avengers" generating an unbelievable $207.4 million in its opening weekend, or its sequel "AOU" which garnered an impressive $187 million. How about "Iron Man 3" , which pulled in $175.3 million? And let's not forget about "The Dark Kight Rises" and its $160.8 million. It's safe to say that people love the "comics- to- movies" trend right now. The comic book wave does not only bring in the money, but also the stars, old and new alike. Robert Downey Jr.'s career was on life support until he put on that metal suit. Chris Pratt was a chubby sidekick funny man until he slimmed down and went on to protect the galaxy in "The Guardians of the Galaxy", and Chris Hemsworth wasn't recognizable until he became Odin's son "Thor". With all that glory and achievement, you'd think the comic book-movie thing would be hitting its decline, but it looks like it's about to have its most dominating year in the two zero sixteen. Here are 7 reasons why 2016 will be the year of the comic books! Brace yourselves!
Cast: Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau/Gambit
Release Date: October 7, 2016
Plot Synopsis: Unknown (For now)
Cultured Buzz: Since the news was released that heartthrob Channing Tatum will be playing fan fave mutant Gambit, comic jocks screamed in disapproval. Channing isn't known as a badass but as a goof ball with good looks, so the cries may be justified. Not known to many, Channing is actually from New Orleans, Gambit's hometown. Tatum claims the mutant was his favorite hero growing up, which adds an interesting factor to the mix. Can he pull off the Cajun Crook with style and grace? Or are we in for the worst comic book movie since "Batman and Robin"? Only time will tell, but best believe we are all patiently waiting to see.
6- Doctor Strange
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange AKA Doctor Strange
Release Date: November 4, 2016
Plot Synopsis: When arrogant surgeon Stephen Strange injures his hands, he gets a new mission in life after a sorcerer takes him under his wing to defend him against the evil supernatural beings of the world. One of many movies and part of the Phase 3 Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Cultured Buzz: Benedict earned the admiration of the comic world a couple of years back when he played the villian in the last Star Trek movie, so casting is not the problem with this one. The question on everyone's mind is, "Will anybody care to watch a glorified magician take on spirits?" With Marvel digging deeper into their comic roster and pulling out more not-so-popular characters, like Ant-Man and Rocket Racoon, we worry if the general audience will embrace them as they did the others. Rumor has it that Doc Strange will have a pivotal role in the MCU setting up "Avengers : Infinty Wars" in 2017, and if you are keeping up with the MCU there are two infinity gems still missing. Could Doc Strange hold the soul gem? We'll wait and see, but we do like the way Marvel is setting up the good Doctor for success.
Cast: Ryan Reynolds as DeadPool/Wade Wilson, Morena Baccarin as CopyCat, T.J. Miller as Weasal, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, and Ed Skrein as Ajax
Realease Date: February 12, 2016
Plot Synopsis: DeadPool will be based on Marvel's favorite anti-hero who was experimented on by the government. Armed with unique powers and a twisted, dark, asshole sense of humor, DeadPool searches for the men who almost destroyed his life.
Cultured Buzz: After being the only good thing in "Wolverine: Origins", Ryan Reynolds' portrayal of the Merc with the Mouth got the comic book world demanding that he star in a full feature film. After years of red tape and online test footage that drove the internet nuts, here we are. But can the movie live up to the hype? Can they capture the magic that is DeadPool? Will we ever forgive Ryan Reynolds for Green Lantern? Can he redeem himself? We find out on the 16th of Feb.! Bring your own chimichangas!
4- X-Men: Apocalypse
Cast: James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawerence as Mystique, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy/Beast, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Lucas Till as Havok, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Olivia Munn as Psylocke, and Oscar Isaac as the villianous Apocalypse. (Rumors are swirling that Hugh Jackman makes an appearance as Wolverine)
Release Date: May 27, 2016
Plot Synopsis: The plot is unknown, but we do know it is set in the 80's and dives into the origins of ancient mutants in Egypt.
Cultured Buzz: After the success of "X-Men: Days of Future Past", fans are super excited to see what's next for our mutants. It finally seems that FOX has figured out how to properly showcase the X-Men on the big screen, with Fassbender and McAvoy taking the franchise to respectable new heights. The movie timeline was erased at the end of the last flick, so we are patiently waiting to see where they will take our characters now. We will finally get to see McAvoy's Professor X bald, get a new Jean, Cyclops and Storm, and after all these years we finally get to see one of the most iconic villians in the mutant world, Apocalyspe, get his due on the big screen. Are you not entertained?
3- Suicide Squad
Cast: Will Smith as DeadShot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as the Joker, Ben Affleck as Batman, Jai Courtney as Captain Bommerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Ike Barinholtz as Hugo Strange and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller
Release Date: August 5, 2016
Plot Synopsis: A secret government agency recruits the world's most dangerous villians to execute dangerous missions in exchange for clemency and/or shorter prison sentences. The group of misfits are nicknamed the Suicide Squad because the missions are suicidal, meaning they might not be coming back after all.
Cultured Buzz: The buzz surrounding this movie is incredible. With Leto taking up the mantle as the Joker, the world is waiting to see what he can do. We get the first movie version of the Joker's main squeeze Harley Quinn, Will Smith as DeadShot, a Killer Croc debut and a Batman-centric movie that isn't necessarily about Batman. DC comics pulled out the big guns with an all-star cast and created a buzz for this movie that translates into big bucks and a stepping stone to building their own cinematic universe.
2- Captain America:Civil War
Cast: Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scalet Witch, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa/Black Panther, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine, William Hurt as General Ross, Frank Grillo as Crossbones and Daniel Bruhl as Baron Zemo.
Release Date: May 6, 2016
Plot Synopsis: Captain America continues to lead the New Avengers in bringing safety/protection to the world, but an incident occurs when on a mission which leads to destruction and casualties. This forces the government to set up a registration-like program to hold superheros accountable which causes a rift between the Avengers. Iron Man is on one side while Captain America is on the other, causing heros to choose sides all while a new villian plans to rise and force global domination.
Cultured Buzz: Captain America vs Iron Man? Yes, that's exactly what is happening here. The movie is based on the popular comic in which we saw our fave heros duke it out over perspectives and pride. Rumor is it's Captain America, Black Widow, the Vision, Falcon and Black Panther vs. Iron Man, Hawkeye, Scarlett Witch, War Machine and SPIDER-MAN!!! No typo. Yes, Spider- Man makes his MCU debut in Civil War. Fan boys are salivating at the fact that we are going to see Spidey swing side by side with the likes of Iron Man. How is Spidey going to be introduced? Who will play him? Who will win the fight? Who is the new villain? So many questions! I have the answers to none, but here's my money!!!
1- Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice
Cast: Henry Cavill as Clack Kent/Superman, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White
Release Date: March 25, 2016
Plot Synopsis: Unknown, but we do know that Batman wants to know if Superman bleeds!
Cultured Buzz: With Ben Affleck as the new Batman and Jesse Eisenberg as the New Lex Luthor, we can't wait to see how this movie plays out. We've already seen Ben play a superhero in Marvel's "DareDevil" which didn't go well, so the doubt is at an all-time high and even moreso with Jesse as a villain. The scrutiny is definitely in the air. All negative opinions aside, this might be the most exciting superhero/comic book movie since the "Avengers". The second stepping stone of the DC cinematic universe will be the 2016 blockbuster of the year with the potential to topple that $207 million Iron Man and friends brought in! 2016 will be an exciting year indeed.
